NEWBORN Prince George of Cambridge isn’t the only new addition to the Royal family.

A painting by a Highbridge artist is also set to join the Duke and Duchess’ household, by St James Palace’s request.

Tazia Fawley, 43, painted Rupert Flies Over the Clifton Suspension Bridge, several years ago in acrylic on wooden board.

She is a member of Heart and Sold, a charity supporting and showcasing artists with Down’sSynrome, and has practised her art for a decade.

When news broke that Kate Middleton was in labour with the third in line to the throne, Heart and Sold’s director, Suzy Moffat, sent a photograph of Tazia’s Bristol Balloon Festival piece to St James’ Palace, inquiring whether they would like the painting to honour the Royal baby.

Tazia described how she felt when the letter, dated July 25, arrived, just three days after Kate Middleton gave birth to Prince George, saying the royals certainly did want “to receive the painting”.

“I was surprised, excited, at first unsure but then I got used to the idea. I never expected it.

It was a painting I really liked. I thought I did it pretty well, and I’d got attached to it. It’s a nice feeling,” she said.

Tazia lives with her mum, sculptor Gylda Thomas, and paints in her separate studio.

Gylda said: “The letter’s very formally written. In the last little bit it says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would like to send their best wishes to Miss Fawley and Ms Moffat. I can quite see this is an honour in the world’s eyes.”

As to what art, and this achievement means to Tazia?

“I’m sure the art helps her because it gives her an identity. I think most people’s attitude towards anybody with a disability is that they feel sorry for them. But it’s hard to feel sorry for Taz when she can do something so well.”

Tazia’s three-week exhibition opens in Burnham’s Princess Hall in the second week of October.
