A KENYAN-STYLE beach party to clean up litter from a beach in Somerset is set to go ahead this summer.

WaveMe, a family-run business from Taunton, will host a communal litter pick party at Brean Down on Saturday, July 13.

The event will cater for attendants of all ages, but will focus on removing litter from the beach, before sending it away to be turned into unique art and gifts.

Louise McClintock, founder of WaveMe, has organised the event in partnership with the National Trust, and Behaviour Change Cornwall, based in Bodmin.

"From the event, everything that the families have collected, we bring that back wash it sort it into colours, we will then deliver that to Bodmin and they will work their magic," she said.

"The National Trust are fully on board - they love the sound of it."

Around three months after the litter has been sent down to Cornwall to be turned into art and gifts, WaveMe will purchase the products to sell on at the same price, meaning party attendants can buy a unique souvenir from the beach clean day.

Louise first had the idea for the party after noting the work of a not-for-profit company called Ocean Sole, in Kenya, which hosts similar events to remove 'flip-flop waste' from beaches in Africa.

They then turn collected flip-flops into stunning sculptures, which they then supply exclusively to the Eden Project, and Harrods.

WaveMe has now struck a deal with the company, meaning their sculptures will be on display at the summer beach party in Brean, and available to purchase online.Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News: A VW campervan sculpture made from flip-flops.A VW campervan sculpture made from flip-flops. ”We’re using their rock the ocean name and we’re going to try and do a similar thing with the plastics because its been so successful in Kenya," Louise said.

“Over time it will gain a lot of leverage, and eventually Ocean Sole will be coming over (from Kenya) and they will do their sculptures at Brean Down."

The party, which takes place from 9am until 3pm on Saturday, July 13, will cost £6 for National Trust members, and £8 for non-members. Both tickets cover the cost of parking.

A sandcastle competition with the chance to win WaveMe merchandise will be taking place for children in attendance, as well as other games.

Louise will also deliver family-friendly talks on how waste ends up on beaches.

“It will be quite an educational day for the family," she said.

“It’s about educating people about how the plastic gets into the sea, what we can do to help, and how we help.

“It’ll be delivered in a way the kids can help as well.”
