NEGOTIATIONS over the future of the Princess are "nearly completed" and could see the building transferred to Burnham and Highbridge Town Council control by October 2007.
Positive discussions since April between town, district councillors and officers are still ongoing and all concerned will be working hard to ensure that the building is put to the best and efficient use of the community.
Subject to the successful conclusion of these negotiations, it is hoped that the Princess will be transferred to the town council by October 2007.
Yesterday it was announced that district council would be giving the town council a grant of £75,000 to help with running costs.
Councillor Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council, said: "I am delighted that these negotiations are nearly completed and with that, the Princess will be under local control and is secure for future uses by the residents and visitors to Burnham.
"It is a valuable community asset to the towns of Burnham and Highbridge and we are truly thrilled at the outcome of these negotiations.
"This goes to show what can be achieved by successful partnerships within local government."
