REFERENCE the energy supply. I am afraid Mrs Brown's outburst is well wide of the mark, wind farms are both inefficient and non-sustainable (no wind, no power), therefore they will only ever be a secondary source of supply.
Build a 1000 turbines and they will not replace a single primary power station. In fact when wind turbines are on stream primary stations have to reduce output or go on standby, something that cannot be achieved by a switch of a button. Ironically nuclear stations are the best to vary their output and therefore the most likely to be replaced if we go ahead with wind farms!
I think the £70 million decommissioning cost is based on out of date 1960s technology, the modern stations are not only safer, but produce less nuclear waste and if the government were to use the South African Pebble Bed method, then the waste would be negligible.
The long term energy solution lies in one of Mrs Brown's sentences, that being wave power. There is enough energy in our coastal waters to supply electricity to this country over and over again as I keep advocating. The reason it is not a forerunner is that it is political, it would take 10-15 years to establish, parliament only runs for five years and no party wants to be the one to commit billions of pounds of taxpayers money, with no output to show when its' term ends and it comes up for re-election!
