BURNHAM police have vowed to get tough on vehicle crime as part of Operation Relentless.

On Friday (February 9), a covert capture car and bike drove around the area to catch criminals.

Around 500 car crimes are committed every week across the force area and in future weeks officers will take to the streets to hand out leaflets, posters, ice scrapers and pens to raise awareness of motor safety.

Drivers who own expensive equipment such as satellite navigation systems, mobile phones and MP3 players were warned to remove all temptation for thieves by taking the gadgets with them when they park.

Chief Inspector Rob Dean said: "As well as targeting and arresting offenders, we also want to help the public, help themselves.

"Lots of car owners are still ignoring the warnings about leaving items in their cars which plays straight into the hands of car thieves.

"If there is nothing on view for them to steal, the likelihood is that they won't break in."
