FILTHY areas of Burnham and Highbridge plagued with graffiti, litter, fly-tipping and over grown greenery, have been tackled as part of a £36,000 scheme aimed at cleaning up the face of the district.

Since the Weekly News reported the launch of Clean Sweep initiative on January 10, grime-busting teams from Sedgemoor District Council have been working hard to make improvements to many areas.

The council hopes the project will help brush away persistent criticism levelled at Burnham and Highbridge - criticisms which have branded the towns as shoddy, downmarket areas.

A number of streets in Burnham, including Abingdon Street, an alleyway in Hudson Street, Technical Street, High Street, Cross Street and Princess Street have had general clean-ups, with the removal of litter, weeds, moss, fly-tipping rubbish and fly-posters.

Victoria Street, Oxford Street, Ravensworth Terrace and Adam Street have also benefited.

On the Esplanade, sand has been cleared around the parking meter by the Tourist Information Office.

Meanwhile in Highbridge, moss has been cleared outside Alpha House, and graffiti and litter have been removed from the Southwell Crescent garage area.

This included the removal of abandoned mattresses.

The Morland and Poplar Estates in Highbridge have also been visited, with large amounts of rubbish taken away.

In Coronation Road, by the playing field, loose waste has been binned and graffiti removed from a garage.

An area outside shops on Morland Road has also been tidied up.

District council leader, Councillor Duncan McGinty previously confirmed the scheme could become a regular feature in coming years.

"If this is favourably received we have a budget for next year," he said.

The feedback from the public would determine whether it continued."
