A COLLISION involving four vehicles shut down the northbound side of the M5 between junctions 22 and 23 on Monday (February 12) afternoon.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene at 1.54pm and had to cut one trapped person out of their car. Officers have confirmed a van, Ford Galaxy and Mondeo were among the crash.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman Dan Mountain said initial fears over serious casualties had proved unfounded.

"It actually turned out to be pretty minor in that the northbound side reopened at about 3.30pm," he said.

"Two people were taken to hospital, one was from the van and one was from another vehicle. Neither were injured seriously and it was all sorted by 4.30pm.

"The air ambulance was called and that was why the motorway had to be shut."
