A CCTV camera could be the key to unlocking how to tackle anti-social behaviour problems on a Burnham road.

Residents of South Street met with police and MP David Heathcoat-Amory on Saturday (February 24) to discuss a way forward.

Fears of homeowners were heightened when a man was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of Sunday, February 4, and members of the Neighbourhood Watch group organised a petition calling for more police patrols.

Sgt Ian Kennett said he thought the meeting had been productive and explained some of the things that would be happening next.

"We basically discussed some positive things to look at and we are working with Sedgemoor District Council, Neighbourhood Watch and the MP to try and tackle the issue," he told the Weekly News.

"I met with Mr Heathcoat-Amory beforehand to discuss the other issues in Burnham and then we went to South Street where all the residents were and the problems were discussed generally.

"It was a very positive meeting and I am going to liase with the local licensees while the MP is going to write to the council.

"We are going to talk to the district council to see if CCTV is a possibility - South Street is not currently actually covered by cameras."

Problems have happened on the stretch because the road is used by people to cut through town during nights out drinking.

Currently information is being collected to understand the true extent of the anti-social behaviour and partnerships have been formed in an effort to tackle it.

MP David Heathcoat-Amory said he hoped the meeting would help find a way forward.

"I do think a lot of positive things came out of it," he said.

"There is obviously a real problem there, shown by the number of people who came to the meeting.

"I do believe we can make progress. Although these anti-social behaviour problems are difficult I do think we can help."
