BURNHAM-ON-SEA is to host a Pride event from next year, it has been announced.
Pride parades take place across the UK and worldwide, celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and queer social and self-acceptance, achievements and legal rights.
Burnham-on-Sea Pride has been launched by Steve Mellor, who is also the founder of the LGBTQ+ Domestic Abuse Awareness Group based in Burnham.
Steve told the Weekly News: "Burnham-on-Sea Pride is set up to celebrate diversity and equality.
"Our aim is to bring a local pride to the community in 2022 and the years to follow.
"I have had a lot of support so far, and I have been overwhelmed with the positive glow that I have received."
FOUNDER: Steve Mellor
Burnham-on-Sea Pride promises to be a day of music, local performers and local drag queens, with the aim of bringing the community together.
In order to avoid problems with littering and noise pollution in Burnham's green spaces, the event is to take place in The Princess Theatre & Arts Centre in the town, rather than outside.
As well as The Princess, Steve is looking to work with local businesses and is inviting them to come on board as sponsors.
Steve said that a few have already approached him since he announced the event, including Burnham Radio.
The intention is to hold the event in July 2022, although the exact date is still to be confirmed.
Anyone who would like to get involved, sponsor the event or find out more about it can get in contact with Steve by emailing burnhampride@gmail.com.
