A CAR caught fire on a busy Somerset route last night.

Firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle on fire at a roundabout in isleport Lane, Highbridge, near the Aldio store at around 8.40pm on Wednesday (August 25).

"Crews from Burnham attended and soon had the fire under control, with two firefighters in breathing apparatus using one hose reel jet to extinguish it," said a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

"Once extinguished, and the 4x4 car made safe, duty of care was left with the driver awaiting recovery.

"There were no casualties but the car was left severely damaged."
