THE Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for the South West.

“There is a chance that thunderstorms may cause some flooding and disruption on Sunday night,” one of their updates said, with a warning in place from 8pm tonight (Sunday, May 15) to 5am tomorrow morning (Monday, May 16).

But forecasts say rain could arrive in Somerset early in the afternoon and then at around 3pm - 4pm.

The update on the Met Office website also read:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, or hail;
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services;
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures;
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

The Met Office forecast for today read: "Mostly cloudy through the morning, but there will be more in the way of bright or sunny spells developing during the afternoon.

"The risk of a few heavy showers forming, but most places staying dry. Feeling warm and humid. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

"An increasing risk of some heavy showers moving north through the evening. 

"Often cloudy overnight, but the risk of a few heavy and potentially thundery showers continues. Mild and muggy. Minimum temperature 10 °C."
