SEVEN community groups in Sedgemoor are set to benefit from nearly £20,000 of funding.
From mental health organisations to tennis clubs, many different groups have been given the funding as part of awards provided by Sedgemoor District Council.
The following organisations were awarded a share of around £18,300:
- Down to Earth were awarded £2,500
They are an organisation that was set up in 2011 to acilitate the improvement of mental health and wellbeing in the community through creative expression and contact with the natural world. They run Art for Everyone 2 (AfE2) which are sessions for people living with mental health challenges, such as Dementia, at the Victoria Park Community Centre, the Walled Gardens of Cannington and Steart Marshes.

The Friends of Apex Park Improvement Group were awarded £2,500
This is to help with the cost of putting on PlayDay on August 3 2022. On Playday, thousands of children and families get out to play at hundreds of community events across the UK. As well as a celebration of children’s right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s lives. The PlayDay at Apex Park is one of the largest in the country.
- The Avenue Lawns Tennis Club, Burnham-on-Sea, was awarded £2,400
This is to help create opportunities for children to receive tennis coaching at school within curriculum time.
- The Axbridge Pageant Trust was awarded £2,500
The pageant started in 1967 as a way of celebrating the opening of the Axbridge bypass (which cleared traffic congestion from the town), and takes place every ten years. The event, held in August 2022, includes live performance, music and storytelling.
- Charley’s Memory were awarded £2,000
This charity offers face to face counselling for young people ages 11 to 25, as well as drop-in clinics. Their current waiting is 16 weeks long, and the grant will help to convert an office space and create ten new counselling spaces.
- Wembdon Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust were awarded £2,500
This is for the Wembdon Community Youth Project, which will will help convert and refurbishing an unfinished upstairs space at the hall where youngsters will be able to meet their friends.
- West Huntspill Parish Council was awarded £3,903.20 from the RLT3 monies (outdoor sites for sport)
This is to create create a disabled toilet and ramp fit for purpose in their existing sports pavilion.
