THE mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge has expressed her sympathy to the Royal Family on behalf of local people following the Queen's death.
Councillor Lesley Millard paid tribute to the UK's longest-serving monarch after she died “peacefully” at Balmoral Castle on Thursday, September 8.
Cllr Millard said: “It is with great sadness that we have today learnt of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a much-loved monarch and will be sorely missed.
“On behalf of the people of Burnham and Highbridge, I wish to convey our deepest sympathy and thoughts to the Royal Family at this terribly sad time.
“Her dedication to our Country and the Crown will go down in the history books and her commitment to a life of service is an example to us all. She will be long remembered and we are thankful for all she has done as our longest serving monarch.”
The official proclamation of King Charles II was formally read by Cllr Millard in the town council's chambers on Sunday, September 11.
Residents have left floral tributes to the Queen in Old Station Approach, Burnham, and Market Street, Highbridge.
A book of condolence is available at the Town Council offices in Jaycroft Road, Burnham, on weekdays between 10am and 3pm.
It will also be available at The Community Hall in Market Street, Highbridge, at the following dates/times:
- Monday, September 12: 9am to 8.30pm
- Tuesday, September 13: 9am to 8.30pm
- Wednesday, September 14: 9.30am to 4pm
- Thursday, September 15: 2pm to 8.30pm
- Friday, September 16: 9am to 2pm
- Saturday, September 17: 10am to 4pm
- Tuesday, September 20: 9am to 4pm
