BRISTOL Water is set to start a five-week scheme to replace a water mains in Burnham-on-Sea town centre after the bank holiday for the Queen's funeral.

John Street, John Street South, and Cross Street will close from Tuesday, September 20 until Friday, October 21.

College Street will be one-way while the works are ongoing. A diversion route will be in place.

The water mains replacement project was scheduled to begin on Monday, September 19, but that has since been designated as a national bank holiday.

A Bristol Water spokesperson said: “The planned work in Burnham-on-Sea will now begin on Tuesday, September 20, to allow our staff to celebrate the Queen’s life and recognise the 70 years of service she gave to her people.

“Over five weeks, we will be carrying out a water mains replacement scheme to ensure our customers receive a reliable water supply.

“Our crew will be replacing the water mains on John Street, John Street South, Cross Street and College Street.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause.

“Replacing these water mains is incredibly important for future-proofing the water network and improving the local water supply.”

The UK Government has confirmed that Monday, September 19 will be a bank holiday to mark Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

An announcement said: “This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.

“This bank holiday will operate in the same way as other bank holidays, and there is no statutory entitlement to time off. Employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.”
