SOME lucky blue tits have been rescued from a horse box's wing mirror by a Highbridge charity.
Secret World Wildlife Rescue were alerted by the driver, who heard chirping coming from the mirror three hours into their journey.
The birds were saved by Dan from Secret World, who took great care to make sure all eight of them could be extracted safely.
A spokesperson said: "A recent trip to Somerset led to the discovery of a nest of blue tits in the wing mirror of a horse box. The horse box had travelled over three hours before the owner was alerted by hungry cheeping from the tiny birds inside.
"Secret World was contacted and a Response Driver sent out, only to find that it was almost impossible to get them out.
"The owners of the horse box kindly took the wing mirror off and it was travelled complete with the baby bluetits. Dan, one of our Wildlife Care Supervisors very carefully cajoled them out by manipulating one chick at a time. Eventually, with a lot of patience, all eight chicks were out and demanding to be fed.
"The wing mirror was returned to the owners who were pleased to hear that all the chicks had been saved. They have continued to do well and are part of the many young birds we see in through our doors at this time of year.
"At the last count we have had 553 juvenile and orphaned birds through our doors in 2023."
