BRIDGWATER'S new Conservative Parliamentary Candidate has called upon the Government to protect access to cash for the most vulnerable people across Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea.
Many people across the UK, and particularly in Somerset, rely on cash for their day-to-day lives, preferring to use physical money rather than paying electronically by card or phone.
Since the pandemic saw a reduction in cash usage for hygienic reasons, many ATMs and bank branches have closed, meaning people in low-income or rural areas now struggle to access cash.
Data from the House of Commons Library shows that between 2018 and 2023 there has been a 15% decrease in the availability of free-to-use ATMs in the Bridgwater area.
Sir Ashley Fox, the new Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bridgwater said: “Across Burnham and Bridgwater, thousands of people still use cash as part of their day-to-day lives, we must not restrict their access to this.
"Following the impact of the pandemic, banks and cash points have closed across Somerset, but people still need these vital services.
“As the MP, I will continue to call for full access for local residents and businesses – and will engage in conversations about banking hubs with the post office and other organisations.
“We need to make sure people can still access this important facility for the next decade, at least, otherwise we are risk of leaving many vulnerable people behind.”
Local small business owner, Kathy Jones, owner of The Toy Cupboard in Burnham on Sea, also added: “I am delighted to be supporting Ashley’s campaign to protect access to cash.
"As a small business owner, it is vital that we allow people to continue to be able to pay in cash for years to come.
"Many of my older and more vulnerable customers, in particular, really rely on cash and it’s an important part of business to continue to serve them.
“I look forward to Ashley becoming our MP and continuing this important campaign in Westminster!"
