A 'FAMILIAR face' who formerly served on the Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council has passed away.

Arthur Thorogood was well known in the Burnham and Highbridge and Bridgwater areas for his contributions to the community and his 12-year stint on the town council.

During his time as a councillor, he had a modern footpath installed from Marine Drive to the Catholic Church car park in 2008, and frequently attended council meetings in Bridgwater.

He stepped down from his role in 2010 at 81 years old, but remained on the Conservative Group committee and was the treasurer for many years.

Prior to his time on the council, he spent 30 years working at the Royal Ordnance Factory Bridgwater.

Raised in London, he was a cobbler by trade.

Arthur was frequently involved in local community groups, including the Burnham-on-Sea branch of the Royal British Legion where he would help support coffee mornings and fundraising.

He was also on the committee at the Burnham Community Centre.

Well known for his volunteering, in April 2011 he was named Governor of the Burnham-on-Sea Moose Lodge - a role in which he remained for several years, raising funds for several local charities.

Arthur always admired the community spirit of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge, and always thought of others - he stood as Chairman of Burnham and Highbridge Gateway Club a social club for adults with disabilities for around 20 years.

He passed away on October 26, 2023.

A funeral service will be held at St Andrew’s Church, on Wednesday, November 22 at midday.

Anyone who wishes can attend the church service and football scarves of any team can be worn as Arthur was a big football fan, especially of Arsenal.

After the service, there will be a separate service at Sedgemoor Crematorium at 1pm for family and close friends.

The wake will be held at The Ritz Social Club from 1pm.

If you are intending to come to the wake, please contact The Ritz so they are aware of numbers on 01278 785365.

Family flowers only and donations very welcome for The Burnham Moose and Gateway Clubs.
