Jill Dando News students wowed their latest patron Sir Lindsay Hoyle inside Parliament's state rooms.

Mr Speaker hosted students travelling from schools in Weston-super-Mare, Highbridge, and Burnham, including Jill Dando's former school, Worle Community School Academy.

Also present were students from Priory Community School Academy, St Anne's Church Academy, Castle Batch Primary School Academy, and The King Alfred School Academy.

In front of the Speaker of the House and a host of guests, the young journalists gave speeches in honour of Jill Dando's positive legacy.

Oliver, 13, of Worle Community School Academy, said: "Jill Dando was a person of humility.

"Even when she was one of the most famous people in Britain, alongside Lady Diana and the Queen, she remained humble."

Isabella, 12, of Priory, Dawson and Charlie, both 17 of The King Alfred School Academy, Theo, 10 of St Anne's Church Academy and Rose, 10 of Castle Batch Primary School Academy also presented speeches.

These encompassed themes of positivity, ambition, and authenticity.

Jill Dando News Disability correspondent Ellise spoke on the expanding positive legacy of Jill Dando.

Other speeches were given by Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose, MP Alex Davies-Jones, and Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who praised the project.

Mr Speaker said: “I loved meeting the Jill Dando News reporters, their project of spreading positivity, good news and kindness is a vital message for our times.

"They have done the memory and legacy of Jill Dando proud, and are instilling a culture of character, kindness, positivity, resilience, respect, and honesty in this generation and future generations - so, a massive well done to you all”.

Jill Dando News was launched in 2017 at her old school, Worle Academy.

The initiative now teaches hundreds of children aged seven to 18, publishing positive stories on the online newspaper Good News Post and wider media.

Prominent figures backing the growth of the project include Sir Richard Branson, Sir Cliff Richard, and two prime ministers.

Olivia Finch, 19 and the first-ever Jill Dando News reporter aged 12, said: "Jill inspired us from day one with her life.

"Jill Dando News is a fitting, expanding legacy for Jill who really was 'the smiling face of Britain.'"
