TRAVELLERS who set up an 'unauthorised encampment' on playing fields in Burnham-on-Sea have been evicted from the site.

The group had set up on the playing fields off Cassis Close, and were issued a Section 61 notice by Avon and Somerset Police.

There were concerns disruption was being caused, or likely to be caused to surrounding residents.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called at 8:25pm Monday, June 10, to reports of an unauthorised encampment on the playing fields off Cassis Close in Burnham-on-Sea.

"A Section 61 notice to leave the site was issued to the group, due to concerns disruption was being caused or likely to be caused to surrounding residents.

"All the vehicles had left the site by 12:30pm on Tuesday, June 11.

"The Neighbourhood Policing team would like to thank the local community and partner agencies for their support in resolving this matter."

Leigh Redman, Labour parliamentary candidate for the new Bridgwater constituency, said: "I understand the area is now vacated of all vehicles.

"Somerset Street scene were on standby to clear the area of litter/waste which is now complete and the land is to be secured again with concrete blocks by close of business.

"The police have confirmed that 78 vehicles travelled north on the M5 out of the Somerset area but their final destination is not known.

"I want to thank all involved for their actions."
