SOMERSET Council has confirmed it served legal notices to travellers who set up an unauthorised encampment in Burnham-on-Sea last week.

Several caravans congregated at Winchester Road Park on Sunday, June 30, causing concern among locals due to the park's close proximity to Burnham-on-Sea Community Infants' School.

The group left the site on Wednesday, July 3, after a joint effort by Avon and Somerset Police, and Somerset Council.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council confirmed: "An unauthorised encampment in Burnham-on-Sea was attended by Council officers who carried out welfare checks and served legal notices, supported by Avon and Somerset Police.

"The site was vacated this week."

The incident was one of many across the Sedgemoor area in recent months, which have included several encampments at the Cassis Close Playing Fields, and multiple incidents at Victoria Park, in Bridgwater.
