A SEA shanty group has helped raises more than £1,000 for Burnham's RNLI station.

The Barnacle Buoys performed at a fundraiser held at Burnham-on-Sea's Tennis Club on Thursday, October 10. The quintet from North Somerset treated the audience to two one hour sets of well and lesser-known sea shanties, including a couple of requested numbers, separated by a thirty-minute comfort break.

The Barnacle Buoys appreciate the hard work undertaken by all RNLI volunteers with the objective of saving lives at sea and stated at the evening event that they perform for the sole benefit of fund-raising for the RNLI. Burnham-on-Sea lifeboat station was opened officially on 15th May 2004, but has been operational since December 2003.

Fundraising Chair Denise Gocher said: “The Barnacle Buoys were brilliant and donated their performing fee to the RNLI. Additionally, the Tennis Club let us use their venue at no cost, and with the well-stocked raffle, plus sale of donated craft items, we have raised £1,117. Altogether a successful evening.”

The Buoys got together in February 2013 and shared a pint or two in the Old Inn, Clevedon and experimented with a few shanties. The Buoys have their own unique style, pleasing our audiences and raising money for charity, primarily Children’s Hospice South West and the RNLI.

In recent times, the Buoys have consistently completed over 40 performances each year.
