U-10: Burnham 30, Minehead 5; Burnham 10, Nailsea & Backwell 15
After some heartening results this season, the Young Bucks Under-10s gave probably their best-ever performance as they beat Minehead convincingly in a three-team mini tournament.
They scored within seconds of the kick-off, when Jake ran through and passed for Josh to touch down. They scored again almost immediately and by half time, were leading 3-1.
Alex, Jake and Josh, the last-named with the try of the match when he combined impressively with Rob, scored in the second half. But the highlights of the game were some blistering runs by the Burnham forward pair of Jacob and Christian, who have really come into their own this season.
In the second game, Burnham came from behind twice against Nailsea & Backwell but were just pipped when the visitors scored on the final whistle to run out 3-2 winners.
Burnham Under-10s' improvement this season has been truly remarkable after a very poor series of results last year and is a credit to the coaching team.
U-12: Burnham 35, Minehead 19; Burnham 0, Nailsea & Backwell 14
Burnham Under-12s have really struggled to come to terms with the loss of seven key players, who now play Sunday football. The result has been some disappointing games for a team used to coming out on top more often than not.
However, in their first match against Minehead in this mini-tournament, they at last showed some of their old courage and determination to record a highly creditable win against tough opposition.
There were tries from Tom Jefferies (2), John Edwards, Liam Shakespeare and Russ Edwards, with Alex Watkins converting all of them, but this was, more than anything, a team performance.
Forwards and backs linked well together, while Burnham showed great improvement in the ruck and maul and also the set scrums. The backs were well marshalled by half-backs Liam and Alex.
In the second game, Nailsea & Backwell proved just too strong as Burnham experimented with some positional and player changes. All in all, though, it was a much more encouraging day, with signs of better things to come.
