Somerset Senior Cup quarter-final: Nailsea United 0, Burnham United 1
UNITED are in with a great chance of winning the Senior Cup after this great win over their Premier-Division rivals at Nailsea on Saturday.
The only other Premier semi-finalists are Wells City. Churchill Club 70, who had a shock, 1-0 away victory over Western League Portishead, and Nailsea Town are both first-division sides.
Against a very physical Nailsea side, Burnham played magnificently with some great movement. Leading scorer Ian Spence, who had missed the previous game, was on the bench in place of Jason Kilduff (not available), while defender Will Davies started hs first full game since returning to the club. He was outstanding.
Burnham keeper Kevin Hurd was in early action, but there were few chances for either side. It was hard work for Burnham playing up the slope.
Hurd made another good, low save from a close-range shot. Burnham had an escape when a mix-up in defence gave Nailsea a chance, but the shot went just wide.
A great move by Burnham involving nearly every player ended with the final ball going wrong and the first half ended goalless.
In the second half, a good tackle by Scott Lismore sent the ball to Neil Seymour, whose shot went straight at the keeper. When Burnham had another chance, the ball bounced awkwardly for Steve Spencer.
Ten minutes into the half, Burnham took the lead. A long throw-in was nodded on by Seymour for Spencer to score a brilliant goal, a powerful header.
Hurd was in the right place again to handle the ball well from a free kick. He also made a good punch under a lot of pressure.
After 80 minutes, Dave Keirle went on for Spencer. Burnham's defence played excellently in the last ten minutes under strong pressure. Davies made great, blocking tackle when a goal looked certain.
This was a great team performance and manager Steve Nicholls had to think hard to find a man of the match. It went to Ryan McErlain.
Team: Hurd, Osgood, Sc Lismore, K McErlain, Davies, Read, Prowse, Seymour, Spencer (sub Keirle), R McErlain,. L McErlain. Unused subs: Spence, Vaughan.
Somerset Women's League: Burnham United 3, Frome Town 1
THIS was a good win by home team Burnham against a much-improved Frome side.l Burnham started a fine move between Leanne Godwin and Dionne Luxon, while Sarah Brueford made two good runs down the right, but her crosses went straight at the keeper.
Chelsea Organ sent a long ball down to Brueford, who forced a corner. From another Brueford cross, the keeper beat the Burnham forwards to the ball. Charlotte Jeffries played well at full-back and half time arrived with no goals.
The second half was a different game. It started off all Burnham and they soon took the lead. The ball was bouncing about in the box and, after Joanne Stafford and Prior had seen shots blocked, Luxon made no mistake.
Burnham had another chance when Prior put Stafford through, but the ball went for a corner. The second goal came from a defensive error, with Stafford putting a good cross over for Luxon to head her second.
Brueford had a good run after she had won a hard tackle, but the keeper dived onto the ball just as it was about to go in. Frome pulled a goal back when Burnham keeper Vicky Hitchens came out to clear a back-pass and completely missed her kick, leaving an opponent with an empty net.
Organ and Emily Rossiter were replaced by Claire Sealey and Lannah Williams. Burnham's third goal came from a corner by Stafford. It went to Prior, who scored with a well-taken effort.
Woman of the match went to Charlotte Prior, with Dionne Luxon, Sarah Brueford and Emily Rossiter close behind.
