Papa Johns National Cup: Burnham RFC 28-32 Walcot RFC
BURNHAM-on-Sea RFC has been knocked out of the Papa Johns National Cup in the first round of the Somerset fixtures.
They lost narrowly at home, 28-32, against a strong Walcot side.
At times it looked as though Burnham were on top but the visitors always had that little bit more to give and in the end it was just enough to get them over the line.
The Burnham lineup featured some players from the First team as well as a mix of Second team players.
Walcot featured a strong lineup for this cup match but the game was evenly matched throughout.
A spokesperson from Walcot Rugby Club said after the game: "A great result in deep Somerset this afternoon for the boys in the 1st round of the Papa John’s Cup!
"Thanks to Burnham-on-Sea RFC for a fantastic game.".
The Burnham squad for this game was: Alex Watkins, Conor Howard, Ryan Beard, Timothy Piper, Harry Macdonald, Scott Havercroft, Samuel Lewis, Nicholas Spinks, Nicholas Mcken, Stefan Pierce, Edward Lewis, Ross McKechan, Jordyn Watkins, Eoghan Westhoff, William Hopkins.
And the substitutes were: Louie Jones, Michael Forward, Scott Mills.
That draws to a close Burnham's season and what a season it has been.
Disregarding this cup result, it has been a nearly flawless campaign which has seen both the First and Second teams earn promotion out of their divisions.
The First team won promotion from the Counties 1 Tribute Western North after finishing second in the competition.
After 22 games played this season in the Counties 1 Tribute Western North, Burnham won 17 and lost 5, finishing with 85 points on the league table.
A great season that was wrapped up with promotion.
And the Seconds were invincible in the Counties 4 Tribute Somerset South.
The Burnham side played sixteen games in the Counties 4 Tribute Somerset South division, winning all sixteen for a total of 80 league points.
A spokesperson said on the two sides season: "Unreal from the lads unbeaten all season, up the Stags!
"Credit to the lads a class season unbeaten all year, credit to Sam kelly captaining the side and all the players giving their all.
"A record breaking season class performances we are going up."
