Generally the Medal format is regarded as the tougher of the scoring formats in golf and when the event demands an aggregate score with a partner there is no room for error.

The Silver Jubilee Cup provides exactly that test annually at Brean and the 2024 staging provided some good scoring as well as a very close finish.

The partnership of Barry Roe (66) and Neil Barker (67) posted an impressive 5 under par total of 133 and this was matched soon after by Simon Prior (66) and Gordy Wheelaghan (67).

These two pairs were 7 clear of the next best and it required a countback to decide the winners. When all the back nine scores were compared it was Roe and Barker who claimed the victory and collected the silverware ahead of Prior and Wheelaghan. Third place on 140 went to Dave Bradley (73) and John Cullinan (67).

In 2022 Ben Amghar, Trevor Bryant and Jon Friend ventured to Brean and won the Open Threeball Scramble.

On Sunday the Kingweston trio did it again in the 2024 edition however it was a much closer result this time as they needed a countback to beat fellow 53 shooters Craig Wheelaghan, Charlie Huggins and Dan Solomon (Burnham & Berrow) with the better back nine.

Both of these scores were returned quite late in the event and they relegated the clubhouse leaders for much of the day into third spot and beyond.

Another countback was required for this place with Dave Bradley, John Cullinan and Nigel Ellis claiming the bronze position ahead of Gordy Wheelaghan, Simon Prior and Brean Club Champion Jez Clift. Scrambles always provide close finishes and the countback rules were working overtime to finalise the 5th and 6th prizes as well from 3 scores of 56.

Placing fifth in the end was Lady Captain Carole Short and her husband Mike alongside their grandson Sebastian Moynihan (Wrag Barn) and Steve and Millie Jones who were joined by Seniors Captain Tim Amy took the final prize of the day. Chris Fairchild and Burnham & Berrow duo of Andy Thomas and Steve Solomon were the unlucky ones to miss out.

Mel Brown is enjoying a decent run of form of late and this continued as he collected the Veterans Trophy on Tuesday morning.

His 41 points secured him the silverware on offer for the leading player over 70 years of age and despite him missing a few short putts along the way he held a 3 point advantage over the runner up in Seniors Chairman Mike Short. Third place on the day went to Kevin Boyer who was the leading 'youngster' under 70 with 37 points to his name.
