Back in June Colin Taylor was successful in the Individual Seniors Open and two months on he teamed up with Alan Evans to enjoy another victory in the Seniors Pairs Open.

The Brean duo scored a nett 62 which matched the early pace set by fellow home players Kevin White and Tony Aimson's return but at the close of the play the countback ruled that with the better back nine Taylor and Evans would be the winners and take the top prize.

White and Aimson had to settle for second two clear of four pairings who posted nett 64's. Once the winners were decided, the computer moved further down the list to do its thing once again in terms of the finishing order.

The best of the back nines came from visiting pair Gerry Morgan and Dave Collins who were part of a large contingent from Wheathill who supported the event once again.

They collected the Best Visitors prize with the third place for the event being taken by Roger Hurrell and his partner Les Baker from Sandwell Park.

The fourth and final prize went to Brean duo Dave Mann and Dave Bradley with Steve Barker and Mark Elvins being the unlucky ones to miss out.

Two days earlier Club Chairman Trevor Pitt was the clear winner of the Seniors August Medal. Only two of the players beat par on a day which proved difficult for scoring.

Pitt had no such problems though in his superb nett 65 which was 3 clear of the other sub par shooter in Mike Bromley who placed second. Mats Mattsson also dipped below 70 to take third with his level par nett score of 69.

The John Smith Trophy was the final event to be played in the month of August and once again was played in memory of past member Nigel Hodges who passed way in 2021 after a lengthy battle with illness.

Hodges had an uncanny knack of winning blind pairs events and the event in his memory uses that format. Over forty golfers took to the course on a dry but tricky day for scoring and not one of them reached 40 points for their rounds. Closest to doing so was Stewart Garrett who carded 39 with Dave Bradley second best on 37. Paul Jones was the only other player to match his handicap with 36 points against his name.

After the round the players gathered in the clubhouse to see who was drawn with who. Club Captain Dan Broom oversaw proceedings as Nigel's widow Pen and their granddaughter Layla drew the cards out. With an odd number of entries the first card drawn was also used for the final card left to complete a pair.

Garrett was first out of the hat but his first drawn partner didn't see him feature in the prizes. Head Greenkeeper Max Smith took part, after prepping the course beforehand, and when his score of 33 points was joined by Simon Baunton's score of 35 part way through the draw the winning combination had been found.

Two pairs totalled 67 and after a countback Paul Bacon and Paul Jones were awarded second ahead of Andy Jones who was the last card remaining in the box and was joined with Garrett's 39 for third place.

Just 2 clubs and a putter was all that was allowed for the Ladies to use as they tackled the Lady Secretary Shanker event.

Making light of that restriction and carding an impressive 36 points to take victory was Joan Maxwell. She won by 6 points from Lady Captain Carole Short with Tracy Spencer taking third as she missed out on countback to Short after also posting 28.

No less than three two's were scored in the event which is possibly a record for a single Ladies event in recent times at Brean and even more surprising considering the restriction on clubs permitted! Gail Mason, Tracy Spencer and Joan Maxwell all recorded them with Maxwell's being apparently very close to scoring another Ace in the Ladies section following Mason's recent hole in one.

Tony Osborne enjoyed the round of the day in the September Stableford on Sunday. He carded 41 points to win Division three with the best score of the event. Runner up to him was Eric Jones with Chris Baker in third but only after they had been separated by a countback on the back nine after both scored 38 along with Tony Higgins who ended up fourth.

Tony Richards was the top man in Division One with his 39 point return giving him a 3 point margin over Steve Jones. Jones was one clear of Neil Barker who took third. Division Two had both the lowest winning points score of the day and the closest finish as a three way countback on 37 points saw Dan West declared the winner ahead of Steve Barker in second and David Hunter third.
