Steve Jones was the leading player in the November Stableford contested on Sunday at Brean. He scored 40 points to lead the Division One scorechart and with it take the Sam Smalldon Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the best score in the event. He was three clear of his nearest top flight rival as Mike Hurman took second ahead of Steve Bateman in third.
Next best return of the day was handed in by Division Three winner Andy Jones. He scored 39 points and was two ahead of runner up Dave Bradley who himself had a 6 point cushion to third placed finisher Nigel Ellis. Steve Mason took Division Two honours with a 38 point haul. He beat another Steve into second place with Steve Barker returning 37 points and Seniors Captain Tim Amy was third on 36.
Simon Prior won the second round of the Winter League courtesy of a 39 point score on Saturday. A birdie 4 on the closing hole gave him 4 stableford points and crucially kept him one clear of runner up Steve Eley who finished his 38 point return in an identical manner. Third place went to Martin Kennelly with 36 points as he edged out Barry Roe on a back nine countback for the position.
Round three of the Seniors Winter League saw a Betterball Medalford format used. The drawn pairs used Medal scoring on the front nine and then changed to stableford on the back nine with the points total being deducted from the nett score to give the final result. Par for the day was calculated to be 15 and the top three duo's scored all beat that and tied on a score of 11. The back nine stableford element of the round was used to decide the countback and with 23 points Chris Moore and Brian Read were declared the winners. Second place with 22 points on the homeward run was Barry Roe and Barry Brindley with Chris Fairchild and Pete Nicholson taking third as they faded a little after a superb front nine. In the overall points standings it is Moore who leads the way as the midway point of the series is approaching. Roe is lying second with a consistent Chris Fairchild in third after recording three third place finishes!
The penultimate round of the Seniors Eclectic was won by Nigel Ellis on another grey and overcast but dry Thursday morning. He handed in a nett 64 which was 5 better than the runner up Neil Barker. Chris Hubbard was placed third after his nett 71. In the overall standings with just one round to play no less than nine players lie within 4 shots of the lead. The man currently holding pole position is Tony Higgins but the chasing pack are not far behind waiting to pounce. The final round takes place later this month.
