Somerset County Cricket Club was first formed back in August 1875 following a cricket match at Sidmouth CC between the Gentlemen of Devon and the Gentlemen of Somerset, which means that next year  the club will celebrate its 150th year or sesquicentennial .

To mark such a momentous year a number of events are being planned including a 150 page book edited by Richard Walsh who has a long association with Somerset.

The book will cover all aspects of the club from the time that it was established right up until the end of 2024 and the contents will capture the flavour of what Somerset CCC is all about.

Inside the pages there will be articles by a number of leading cricket writers including Scyld Berry, Paul Edwards, Anthony Gibson, Vic Marks, Stephen Lamb, Sam Dalling,  and Richard Latham.

There will also be contributions from the likes of Lord Botham, John Cleese, Lord Archer, Anya Shrubsole and Jos Buttler, Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick about what Somerset means to them.

It is expected that the book will be published by the end of November and will provide an ideal Christmas gift for anyone who follows Somerset CCC.

A  Somerset CCC 150th year Gala Dinner is planned for the end of February when it is hoped that some of the stars of yesteryear will return to help to kick start the celebrations.

A special cricket match is planned to take place at Sidmouth CC on August 18th- the date 150 years ago that Somerset CCC was formed.

There will be several Golf Days taking place around the county which it is hoped will involve some current and former players.

A special SCCC 150 tie is being produced in a limited edition of just 150.

Other events that are in the planning stage include a Somerset CCC Quiz Night, a Greyhound Racing Night and a Return to Glory Night to which all of those involved in the cup winning sides of 2001, 2005,2007, 2019 and 2023 will be invited.

In addition a Somerset CCC 150 clothing range is being produced to enable everyone to feel part of what promises to be another special year for the club.

Richard Brice who is a board member of Somerset CCC and is overseeing the 150 year celebrations said: “Somerset County Cricket Club is a key part of our local and wider community, and means so much to so many people so it is important that we celebrate an organisation that has a special place in so many people’s lives.”

Richard added: “Many of these events are still being finalised but as and when further details become available they will be announced through the SCCC website.”
